Annie Aguilar, a 17-year-old 11th grader from Alhambra, California, is the West Region Winner of the CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS’ 1998 Youth Advocates of the Year Awards. The nationwide competition recognizes outstanding youth advocacy efforts by young tobacco control activists. Annie received her title in Washington, DC on April 30, 1998.

Annie AguilarAnnie has spoken to members of Congress as a Youth Representative for the Hispanic/Latino Tobacco Education Network about the amount of advertising targeted at young people, as well as the accessibility of tobacco products in her community. She has participated in local undercover buying operations and was the keynote speaker at numerous public tobacco control events.

She is a member of the Youth Tobacco Control Coalition, The Hispanic/Latino Tobacco Education Network and President of the Keystone Nights Club, sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club. She has also served as youth advisor to KCET-TV’s "Finding the Power" project, which helps young people become better advocates.
