Michael Bloomberg Is an Unparalleled Leader in Protecting Public Health in the U.S. and Around the World
Statement of Matthew L. Myers, President, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
March 05, 2019
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Michael R. Bloomberg announced today that he will not run for president of the United States in 2020. Regardless of this decision, there is no question that Mayor Bloomberg will continue to build an unparalleled record of public service in the United States and around the world, especially on issues of public health, including the fight against tobacco. No other public official has done more to promote public health and advance the fight against tobacco use – the No. 1 cause of preventable death – than Mayor Bloomberg. He has provided truly extraordinary leadership on a wide range of public health issues as Mayor of New York City, as a philanthropist and in other capacities, including serving as the WHO Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries and as United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Change. We look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Bloomberg as he adds to this exceptional legacy in the future.
