Statement of Matthew L. Myers, President, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
November 12, 2021
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids strongly supports President Biden’s nomination of Dr. Robert Califf as Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and urges the U.S. Senate to quickly confirm him.
Dr. Califf is a superb choice and will be prepared on day one to address the enormous challenges facing the FDA, including the urgent need for action to eliminate all flavored tobacco products, including flavored e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. We also urge Dr. Califf and the FDA to move forward with the important proposal to limit nicotine in cigarettes to non-addictive or minimally addictive levels. As a cardiologist, Dr. Califf understands the continued devastating impact of tobacco use and the need to stop the tobacco industry from addicting another generation of kids.
We look forward to working with Dr. Califf and the Biden Administration in taking bold action to end the youth e-cigarette epidemic and accelerate progress in reducing tobacco use, which remains the nation’s number one cause of preventable death.
