Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids Unveils Redesigned, Easy-To-Use Web Site Featuring State-Of-The-Art Advocacy Tools

March 08, 2000

Washington, DC The CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS announces the launch of its redesigned and streamlined web site - tobaccofreekids.org – that utilizes state-of-the-art technology to better inform the public about the CAMPAIGN’s advocacy initiatives and empower visitors to take action to protect kids. The new site’s highlights include an interactive Action Center that allows visitors to e-mail their elected officials, join the CAMPAIGN, register for e-mail updates, print and post an ad, make a donation, and more. Other features include extensive reports on the CAMPAIGN’s federal, state and international advocacy initiatives; a Research Center with an array of Fact Sheets on tobacco issues and statistics; a Press Office with all CAMPAIGN press statements and releases; and a Special Reports section with in-depth features on issues such as the tobacco industry’s ongoing public relations campaign, their role in international cigarette smuggling, and their betrayal of American tobacco farmers. “The site was designed with a focus on advocacy and education,” said Matthew Myers, CAMPAIGN president. “We present the facts on every facet of tobacco in our society. Then we give people the tools to take a stand and help protect kids.” Atop the home page is a death clock that automatically counts the number of kids who have become regular smokers so far this year and the number of youth smokers who will die prematurely from their addiction. The main site links to a sister site providing information on the CAMPAIGN’s annual Kick Butts Day (scheduled for April 5, 2000) – kickbuttsday.org. “Our new web site has taken our Internet presence to a new level. It allows us to interact more with advocates, parents, teachers, kids, policy-makers and the media,” said Kathryn Kahler Vose, Vice President of Communications & Marketing. The site was developed by NetCampaign, an Internet design and technology firm serving the political, advocacy and non-profit sector. NetCampaign’s recent web sites include NetElection.org, the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, the Democracy Online Project at George Washington University and the successful campaign of U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey (NY-26). The Action Center technology was developed by Issue Dynamics, Inc. The CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS is the country’s largest non-governmental initiative ever launched to reduce tobacco use among youth.
