Statement of Matthew L. Myers, President, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
September 15, 2010
Washington, D.C. — Under Mayor Bloomberg's leadership, New York City has been a global leader in the fight against tobacco use and has made significant progress by implementing higher tobacco taxes, comprehensive smoke-free air laws and hard-hitting tobacco prevention and cessation campaigns. The proposed ban on smoking in parks and at beaches continues the city's innovative efforts to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.
We applaud Mayor Bloomberg and Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City Health Commissioner, for their strong leadership in the fight against tobacco use, the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and around the world.
